The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that several senior U.S. military officials have warned Pete Hegseth, the U.S. secretary of war, that continuing large-scale military operations against the Islamic Republic is unsustainable and weakens the U.S. military’s ability to counter other threats, including defending U.S. territory. According to these sources, the warnings were submitted to Hegseth in the 23 Mordad edition of the “Secretary of War’s Order Book” by the chiefs of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, along with four-star commanders responsible for U.S. military operations in Europe, Asia and Latin America. They are part of a classified document. The report said that, given Trump’s insistence that the military option remains on the table, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which is responsible for managing the war against the Islamic Republic, has kept more than 50,000 troops on alert for months, ready to act if the president orders further strikes. The First Branch of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court has sentenced 10 defendants in the case known as the “Isfahan Shahada Square” case to death. Six other defendants in the case have received lengthy prison sentences. The Telegram channel Khabarnameha reported that the sentences were issued at the trial-court level: @MahmoudianMehdi “Taraneh Rahimi,” “Navid Elyasi,” “Abolfazl Dadgostar,” “Mehdi Mansouri,” “Ahmadreza Saeedi,” “Mehrdad Boueri,” “Mohammad Mehdi Asadi,” “Armin Gholami,” “Parsa Jafari,” and “Mehdi Jafari,” known as “Mehdi Khosravi,” are the 10 defendants sentenced to death. In another part of the ruling, “Romina Rahimi” and “Milad Boueri” were each sentenced to 25 years in prison, and “Hamed Mehralian” to 15 years. “Setayesh Saedi,” “Sajjad Abedi,” and “Ali Boueri” were each sentenced to five years in prison. The court also sentenced all 16 defendants to five years for “assembly and collusion,” five years for “incitement,” and one year for “propaganda against the system.” The “Isfahan Shahada Square” case was opened in connection with the Dey 1404 protests. The defendants were arrested at their homes between 14 Bahman and 24 Esfand of that year. Some of them worked at shoe and clothing stores around Shahada Street, or were relatives of the store owners. Most of the defendants are under 23. Twin sisters Taraneh and Romina Rahimi were 19 when they were arrested. Hearings into the charges against them began on 22 Tir 1405 at the First Branch of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court. The charges announced against them included “enmity against God,” “aiding and abetting enmity against God,” “destruction of public property amounting to enmity against God,” “assembly and collusion,” and “propaganda against the system.” The case was opened after Abbas Kamrani, a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and a homeless civilian were killed during the 18 Dey protests. However, the indictment against the defendants did not include a murder charge. Informed sources had previously said that no evidence proving the defendants’ role in the deaths of the two men was presented at the hearings, and that the charges were based on confessions obtained during interrogations. Several defendants told the court that their confessions had been extracted through beatings, the use of a stun gun, and threats of sexual assault. Ahmadreza Saeedi also told the judges that he had been tortured during interrogation. According to published information, one of the women charged in the case also reported being sexually assaulted while in detention and filed a complaint. The court issued her sentence without hearing that complaint. The defendants’ lawyers were also denied full access to the case file. Reports say the court did not allow each defendant to have the legally permitted number of defense attorneys. The judges in the case, Mohammadreza Tavakoli and Morteza Barati, have previously issued death sentences in political and security cases in Isfahan.
