The widespread internet cutoffs, paralysis of communications, unprecedented shutdown of media outlets, and intimidation of journalists and witnesses means one thing: preventing the observation, documentation, and investigation of a massive and historic crime. Over the past few days, Iran International received scattered but shocking and disturbing reports, and deployed all its resources with professional fact-checking to reach a more precise assessment of the scale of the brutal crackdown and ruthless massacre of people in recent protests. In a country where the government deliberately blocks access to information, reaching this assessment is difficult and time-consuming work - especially since rushing to announce incomplete casualty figures could lead to errors in recording reality and distorting the dimensions of this great tragedy. Starting Sunday, the volume of evidence and overlapping accounts reached a level where we could arrive at a relatively clear picture. Over the past two days, Iran International's editorial board has carefully examined information from a source close to the Supreme National Security Council, two sources in the presidential office, accounts from several sources within the Revolutionary Guards in the cities of Mashhad, Kermanshah and Isfahan, testimonies from eyewitnesses and families of victims, field reports, data from medical centers, and information provided to us by doctors and nurses in various cities - all reviewed precisely, in multiple stages, and according to professional standards.
