Witkoff: Current US-Iran negotiations are focused on nuclear issues for now Axios reported that Steve Witkoff, the US President's special envoy, said in a private meeting on Tuesday that the Trump administration wants the Islamic Republic to accept that any future nuclear agreement would remain in place indefinitely. This was stated by one US official and two other sources familiar with his remarks. According to the 2015 agreement that Trump withdrew from, most restrictions on Iran's nuclear program would gradually expire between eight to 25 years after signing. Iran had also committed to never pursue nuclear weapons. Removing such clauses (sunset clauses in the JCPOA) could strengthen the agreement and make it easier for Trump to sell domestically as an upgraded version of Obama's deal. According to sources, Witkoff told a group of AIPAC supporters in Washington: "We start with the Iranians from this assumption that there are no sunset clauses. Whether we reach an agreement or not, our assumption is this: you must behave this way for the rest of your lives." Witkoff also said current US-Iran negotiations are focused on nuclear issues for now, but if an agreement is reached, the Trump administration would like to hold subsequent discussions about Iran's missile program and support for proxy forces. Statements the US President made about Iran in his annual speech.
