General David Petraeus, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), described the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as leader of the Islamic Republic as "regrettable" in an interview with CNN. He said: "I don't think he's even an Ayatollah, unless he was recently promoted to this position; something that happened to his father as well. When he was chosen decades ago, he wasn't much of a prominent figure either."
