Donald Trump, the US President, called Islamic Republic security forces "thugs and criminals" and said he found it "understandable" that protest demonstrations have not formed in Iran since the recent war began. Speaking aboard the presidential aircraft, Mr. Trump responded to a question about protests in Iran saying: "You're dealing with thugs and criminals and terrible people. You're dealing with violent and evil people, and this relates to the leadership and their subordinates, their army or police." The US President referred to the numerous warnings from Islamic Republic judicial and security institutions to the people about potential protests and said: "They have notified everyone and issued statements that if you protest, you will be shot and killed." Emphasizing that protesters are unarmed, he said he knows the Iranian people are brave, but doesn't think they will protest: "I think protesting is very difficult for them. I completely understand that. They said, if you protest, you will be killed." The US President, referring to the suppression of last December's protests in Iran, repeated a statistic he had previously cited about 32,000 protesters being killed in Iran and said: "At least we think this number is much higher than that. They shot and killed 32,000 protesters who were very eager and wanted to see change... They have destroyed the country. The people running that place have destroyed the country." Mr. Trump added: "Think about it, they shot and killed far more than 32,000 people. Now two days ago they issued a notice that we will kill, we will shoot any protester and kill them. And they don't have weapons, meaning the protesters don't have weapons. So I can completely understand why they're not doing this."
