Following reports that JD Vance, the U.S. vice president, had sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Islamic Republic’s Supreme National Security Council, The New York Times reported on Thursday that direct talks between Tehran and Washington could begin as early as next week in Qatar or Turkey.
According to The New York Times, citing informed Iranian and American officials, if Tehran accepts Vance’s proposal, the talks would technically begin without preconditions. However, Vance stressed in his letter that the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program must be on the table from the start of negotiations.
A U.S. official told The New York Times that Washington decided to send the letter to Rezaei because American officials had concluded they needed to communicate directly with someone in the Islamic Republic’s leadership who has influence over the hard-line faction opposed to an agreement and over the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The New York Times reported that Donald Trump had read and approved the letter before it was sent to Tehran. The newspaper also pointed to recent diplomatic efforts by officials from Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia to ease tensions. According to two Iranian officials, mediators expressed concern during these meetings about the risk of unrest and destruction in the region if hostilities resume. Regional leaders have urged the Islamic Republic to show greater flexibility in its nuclear program to avert war.
These diplomatic efforts are taking place as Trump considers the possibility of renewed military strikes against the Islamic Republic, including attacks on energy infrastructure and other vital centers of Iran’s economy.

On Thursday, 7 Aban, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps released a video claiming it had detected a US drone known as the “MQM-170” west of the Strait of Hormuz and brought it safely to the ground.
According to the IRNA news agency, the IRGC Navy said in a statement: “During an offensive operation, this force’s electronic warfare unit succeeded in taking control of the guidance and control systems of a US MQM-170 drone after detecting and identifying it west of the Strait of Hormuz, and bringing it safely to the ground.”
According to the statement, the drone’s mission was to identify the Islamic Republic’s air defense systems along the coast of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC Navy also said that an examination of the data recovered from the drone showed that it had taken off from the coast of one of the countries on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf.

The U.S. Treasury secretary has described the economic pressure campaign against Iran as “highly successful,” saying that cutting off access to dollars has forced the Islamic Republic to cut funding for its proxy groups in the region.
Speaking to CNBC on Wednesday afternoon, 5 Aban, Scott Bessent discussed the economic pressure on Iran under a plan known as “Operation Economic Exclusion.” He said internal estimates suggest Iran’s economy could shrink by as much as 25 percent over the course of a year.
He added that Islamic Republic officials “began expressing open concern about the economic situation this summer. Now, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is deeply worried, and they are speaking publicly and in private about collapse.”
Scott Bessent also said Iran is cutting funding to its proxy groups, including Yemen’s Houthis, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and the extremist group Hamas.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded to a Wall Street Journal report published on Wednesday, 6 Aban, which said Vice President J.D. Vance had sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Islamic Republic’s Supreme National Security Council, with the aim of resuming peace negotiations with the Islamic Republic. The report said the letter was sent at Trump’s direction.
On Wednesday evening, a reporter asked Trump: “Did you instruct Vance to talk about starting peace negotiations with the Islamic Republic?” Trump replied, “No, the point is that they need aid, including medical equipment and various other supplies.”
The U.S. president added: “He asked for my opinion, and I said, if you want to do it, that’s fine. Basically, the goal is to deliver the equipment and supplies needed to help people who are not in good physical condition.”
According to the report, Vance is weighing whether the Islamic Republic and Washington can find enough common ground to persuade Trump not to issue a final order in the coming weeks for a short, intense attack against the Islamic Republic.
This week, the U.S. president called a temporary ceasefire with the Islamic Republic “a waste of time” and told American voters to watch what happens with the Islamic Republic in the coming weeks. He has also previously said that the U.S. must finish its work with the Islamic Republic completely and properly so it can never obtain a nuclear weapon.
A few days earlier, the Wall Street Journal had reported in a video report that more munitions were being sent to U.S. warships in waters near Iran.
