As judicial and security crackdowns on teachers’ union activists continue, three teachers have been sentenced to prison and additional penalties, while another union activist was arrested in Fars Province. According to the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, Ahmad Alizadeh, a retired teacher and civil activist from Abdanan, was sentenced by the Ilam Revolutionary Court to two years in prison, a one-year travel ban, revocation of his passport, and 1,080 hours of unpaid community service. Meanwhile, Azadeh Saleki, a teacher in Khaf County and one of those arrested during the protests in Dey 1404, was sentenced to five years in prison. According to published reports, her initial sentence was 10 years, which was reduced to five on appeal. After her arrest in Dey 1404, Saleki spent about a month in detention before being temporarily released on bail of 3 billion tomans. Reports also indicate that enforcing the sentence could lead to her dismissal from the Ministry of Education. In 1401, while teaching in Torbat-e Heydarieh County, Saleki was also suspended from work for a month and then transferred to Khaf County because of her union activities and comments in the classroom. Former Iranian football player Mojtaba Tarshiz and his wife were shot and killed by Islamic Republic security forces on Thursday, July 18, 2024. According to sports broadcaster and journalist Mojtaba Pourbakhsh, Mojtaba Tarshiz's wife was also killed alongside him.
